This is the steamship "Mississippi Queen" sailing on a choppy river. The ship is wonderfully detailed throughout. The bottom of the hull is black and the around the top is red. There are 3 deck levels and the deck floors are painted red and the deck structures are painted white with numerous port windows and doors on each level. The is railing around each deck area and hanging from the railing are 14 life saver rings. On the lower deck is the passenger plank suspended from a boom mast with detailed rigging. Near the stern in large letter is the name "Mississippi Queen" and in very small letters "Saint-Louis." On the stern is a large red paddle with railing on each side. Metal stairs extend from the lower deck on both the front and rear to the 2nd level. An American flag flies from the rear of the top deck. The Pilots steering house is on the very top and has a runway in front with metal stairs with railing leading to the deck below. The name "Mississippi Queen" is written half-circle on top of the pilots cabin. A canopy covers the rear portion of the top deck. 2 black smoke stacks are toward the front with decorative metal between the stacks and the initials "MQ" in the metal.
Under the sea is a small label with the following information: "Johann Lonz Radenbacherstrasse 31 5450 Neuwied 11." The bottle is sealed with a cork and red sealing wax and rests on a simple wooden stand. Written on the inside of the cork is the following: "Joh. Lonz, 1988 Neuwied."
The following information was provided by Herbert Lonz, son of the craftsman of this model.
"This model was made by Johann Wilhelm Lonz, who died in November 2003. He was 88 years old at the time of death. He learned this art working with his father on a Rhine ship, and was a seaman and also a ship captain on the rivers in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and France. Everything to do with ships became his hobby. He modeled ships and built radio-remote controlled ships. He sold many of his scaled ship models to other people. Each model is unique a required many hours and days of manual work to build. He built his ships in bottles during the last 30 - 40 years."
He also made models #308, 311, and 312.
