This is a wonderful and very folk art diorama of a whaling expedition. The large 3 liter bottle contains a 3 mast whaling ship at anchor with 13 furled sails showing the reef lines and seams. The hull is red with a black waterline positioned stripe and above that a white stripe with 8 gun ports painted in black shown on each side. The ship is wonderful rigged with both standing and running rigging shown. There is a 2 sectioned bowsprit with a white dolphin striker midway. The deck of the ship has 3 large deck houses painted white with each having 3 window ports painted on black. They all have a brown roof. On deck are 3 much larger than life sailors carved in wood and painted. 2 of the men are wearing black pants and white sailor tops. The man in front, perhaps the captain is painted in an all black outfit. The ship sports a Great Britain flag and 5 signal or code flags on the stern of the ship. In the water are two whales diving to escape in the water with only the lower part of the whale and the tail showing. Chasing the whales are 2 identical whaling boats (one by each whale) each with 6 crew members carved in wood and then painted in similar but slightly different color schemes. 4 men are rowing, each with a long wooden oar, one steering in the stern, and the man in front stands with his arm raised up high with a harpoon in it ready to thrust the harpoon in the whale. Both boats show the planking and the stern rudder and steering. The bottle is corked with a Turks head knot around the neck. Sits on wood stand.
