This is a model of the second submarine USS Sand Lance SSN-660 mounted on a pedestal inside an old ship ballast bottle. The sub has a brass colored propeller and the markings 660 on the entrance to the sub. The bottle is sealed with a cork and wrapped with a rope. The stand is wooden with a wood plaque with the words "USS Sand Lance SSN-660." The second SAND LANCE represents a tremendous increase in both size and performance over her diesel-electric predecessor. Outfitted with the most modern sensor systems and weapons, provided habitability features to enable her to undertake extended operations, and powered by nuclear energy, SAND LANCE was launched on 11 November 1969. SAND LANCE was commissioned on 25 September 1971. On 3 April 1995, SAND LANCE moved to Groton, CT, and joined the forces of Submarine Squadron TWO.
